The Germans call it a Klappbuch: three horizontal strips, each with 35 pages. Flip the top for a beginning, the middle for a subject, the bottom for what happens. Every combination is a grammatically correct sentence — and every sentence claims something good about this country.

35 ways to begin. Bravely launched … Astonishingly unbureaucratic … Gloriously unflustered …

35 real German institutions. Cooperatives, repair cafés, youth orchestras, citizens’ assemblies, outbreaks of courage …

35 endings — the positive turn Germany usually hopes for only after three committee meetings.
Gloriously unflusteredoutbreaks of couragesound crazy — and work anyway.
One of 42,875. Each page also carries a German proverb in the original, with an English line beneath it — some have exact English twins, some we kept deliberately literal. “The morning hour has gold in its mouth.”
This book was written in German, for Germans, in a country famous for a feeling it exported under its own name: German Angst. You are holding the counter-export. Five things worth knowing.
Deutschmut (say: DOYTCH-moot) is a new German word, built like the old ones: Anmut, Großmut, Wagemut. Germany lends words to the world — Kindergarten, Zeitgeist, Wanderlust, Angst — whenever English has no better one. We would like this one to travel too. It means: the well-founded expectation that effort pays off.
Cooperatives, citizens’ assemblies, repair cafés, youth orchestras, tinkerers’ workshops: the middle strip is not decoration. Each term names an institution of German everyday life. Together they draw the portrait of a Germany you rarely read about. A glossary at the back explains the ones that don’t travel on their own.
Every page carries a German proverb in the original, with an English rendering beneath it. Some we kept deliberately literal, because they tell you something no translation could: this is a culture that talks to itself in small, sturdy sentences — and then acts on them.
The thoroughness that makes us find, in advance, the reason why something cannot work is the same thoroughness that built the Energiewende, some 600,000 registered clubs and a volunteer force of about 27 million people. Deutschmut is that thoroughness, pointed forward.
All 42,875 of them. We checked each one. We are German.
The Old High German muot did not mean bravery but spirit, state of mind — the very root that became the English mood. Whoever turns mood back into courage merely reunites what belongs together.

No. Everything in the International Edition is in English. The German proverbs appear in the original with an English line beneath — that is part of the charm, not a hurdle.
It is an edition, not just a translation: same book, same mechanics, all 42,875 sentences rebuilt so that every combination works in English — plus a note for readers abroad and a glossary explaining the German institutions on the middle strip.
Of course. The German Standard Edition (€49) and the numbered Collector’s Edition (€89) ship to Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein — order here (German).
